Millwall Community Academy recently linked up with FC Puerto Del Carmen of Lanzarote for an exciting new arrangement, inviting six players to join the two-year education and football development programme, in partnership with SCL Education Group.

Football Development Manager, Sean Daly, kick-started the relationship with FC Puerto Del Carmen Chairman, Daniel Trigg, as both parties agreed that an arrangement could provide major benefits for both sides.

It was soon decided that 40 players, accompanied by 7 coaching staff, would make the trip from Lanzarote to Millwall Community Academy, to take part in the Showcase Games; a two-day event, giving the Lanzarote lads a flavour for English football, whilst introducing them to the Academy experience.

Arriving at the Millwall venue, the international lads were divided into two teams before going head to head against SCL and Millwall Community Trust’s post-16 Academy students.

In addition to developing their sporting skills, FC Puerto Del Carmen’s Trigg was particularly keen to give his lads a true cultural experience during their time in England. The players embarked on a trip to the 02 Academy, a stadium tour of The Den, and had the opportunity to walk out on-pitch before watching Millwall FC face Leeds United.

During the Showcase Games, FE Sports Lecturer Kenrick Dyer developed conversations with Daniel Trigg further, proposing a more permanent link between the clubs.

This set the process of enrolling six of the Lanzarote lads onto the full-time education and football development programme into motion. The selected players are set to travel back to London at the end of the month to get started.

SCL’s FE Sports Lecturer, Kenrick Dyer explained: “Creating a link with FC Puerto Del Carmen, and a partnership bringing six new students to join the programme, will bridge the gap between English and Spanish education and football.”

Together, FC Puerto Del Carmen, Millwall Community Trust and SCL are providing Lanzarote youngsters with the opportunity to learn English and maths from highly qualified SCL tutors, whilst being immersed into a new culture.

Sparking conversations overseas, this new and exciting partnership builds great European links for SCL, and lays the foundations for further international opportunities in the future.

From everyone at SCL Education Group and Millwall Community Trust Academy, we wish our new learners the very best of luck, and hope they settle in well to their new programme.
